Donkey skin 2013 P5-Cie ECO P10-Gateway Learning Community Dance 

The choreographer Emilio Calcagno created the ballet Donkey skin whose original music soundtrack was recorded by Orchestre de Picardie at the Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne. The ballet was first performed in Creil and then at Thurrock International Celebration of Culture coordinated by Royal Opera House and involving walk-on dancers from Gateway Learning Community. Students from the University for the Creative Arts designed the promotional poster and filmed the French performance.

Brubeck project 2013 P6-Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne P8-Royal Opera House Music 

Orchestre de Bretagne invites world famous jazzman and composer Dave Brubeck for the European premiere of his latest orchestra piece “Ansel Adams' America”. Rather than Paris or London, in October 2012, this premiere is presented in Rennes and Saint-Brieuc. This follows a residency in Brittany, where Orchestre de Bretagne and Orchestre de Picardie join their forces to promote this iconic repertoire with the addition of some brass musicians from member orchestras of ONE®-an Orchestra Network for Europe project (see www.orchestranetwork.eu).

In the early summer of 2013, Royal Opera House Education and Thurrock Music Services host a public performance of a Brubeck programme with related master classes in Essex.

These performances and their rehearsals engage young students from France (Conservatory of Music in Lorient, specialized arts classes and attendees from “l’Estran” in Guidel) and England (Melbourn Village College, Royal Opera House Education and Thurrock Music Services) to follow the creative process.

To celebrate the Verdi bicentenary,  Orchestre de Picardie, Brighton Festival Chorus, Orchestre de Bretagne  and Royal Opera House Education present one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most  notorious and popular choral masterpiece “la Messa da Requiem” in 2 concerts in Picardie and 2 concerts in Brittany. In 2014 it will be presented in the other side of the Channel  as part of Thurrock International Celebration of Culture (TICC) Festival. 

University for the Creative Arts students and staff will record the 1st French performance to enable multidesign work to be undertaken. Footage may also be used in the ACT network documentary. Still images will form part of a supporting exhibition with Southend YMCA.  be undertaken. Footage may also be used in the ACT network documentary.

Between the Acts 2013 P4-ComdePic P11-University for the Creative Arts Theatre/Creative arts 

Action initiated by Comédie de Picardie which putd on a new production of Virginia Woolf's novel in a French stage adaptation.

Students from the Creative Arts for Theatre & Film department of University for the Creative Arts design sets, props and some costumes to create a genuine English atmosphere for this production of “Between the Acts/Entre les Actes”. These students also receive skills support from professionals of Royal Opera House Education in Thurrock Production House.

ACT Central 2013 P7-Melbourn Village College All partners  

Melbourn Village College put the ACT project at the centre of school curricula and extra curricula activity for the life of the project and make the idea of ‘community’ the research question to be explored as creatively as imagined by mapping and extending the curricula, sharing this work with all partners especially looking to extend the thinking and findings with our French Partners across the Channel.

In preparation for the English performance of “Donkey Skin”, Gateway Learning Community and Southend YMCA organise a series of workshops for their students to develop fringe performances.

Royal Opera House Education hosts Cie ECO-Emilio Calcagno for a residency with the organisation of workshops and masterclasses open to non-professional dancers and young people from Thurrock. Moreover, the dancers rehearse with 10 young people from Gateway Learning Community who are the walk-on dancers in the TICC 'Donkey skin' performance.

In July 2013 when Orchestre de Bretagne and Chris Burbeck go to Essex for a “classics meet the jazz” performance, the students from Thurrock Music Services benefit from what the French students had in October 2012.

As part of a specific cross-border curriculum, young people from Southend YMCA participants attend a Verdi Requiem performance in France. 

To jointly prepare for the Verdi Requiem performances at TICC 2014 and in Cambridge, Brighton Festival Chorus works with ROH Community Chorus.

Royal Opera House Education proposes “A day in the heart of the ROH Production House in Purfleet” a programme of guided tours and workshops open to all technical and managerial staff of both French and English partners as part of their lifelong learning scheme.

To complement its various projects, P9-Southend YMCA carries out lessons, workshops and master classes. The aims are to enable the artistic development of young people with fewer opportunities and to support their engagement within cultural and artistic activity.

MVC fieldtrips to the Somme 2013 P7-Melbourn Village College LP-Orchestre de Picardie  

Melbourn Village College will use a series of visits to the Somme area in Picardie to introduce and explore aspects of both the intercultural exchange and the events and performances building up to the commemoration of the anniversary of the start of World War I.

Orchestre de Picardie will facilitate links with local museums and sites of interest as well as providing insight into the significant musical and cultural landscape directly and indirectly linked to WW1 in the Somme area.

Southend YMCA will use a fieldtrip to the Somme to introduce aspects of historical and cultural interest as well as the events building up to the commemoration of the centenary of the start of World War I to its participants.
